The 43-year old patient Lin suffered from several illnesses such as Hepatitis B, chronic renal failure, primary carcinoma of the liver. Two years ago, the doctor resected his right kidney, and at the beginning of this year, a left kidney embolization operation was performed on him. Till now, the patient has no kidney at all and can only rely on the regular hemodialysis to substitute for the kidney. Presently, the patient is receiving treatment in the Liver Diseases Center of the PLA No. 180 Hospital.
Director of the Liver Diseases Center Wang Chongguo and Director of the General Surgery Zhang Chenghua reached a consensus after analyzing and studying the state of illness of their patient: only by conducting liver and kidney joint transplantation, can the life of the patient be saved or prolonged. After a period of liver nutrition, kidney nutrition treatment, Lin was sent to the operation room.
Performing liver and kidney transplantation operation at the same time is very risky and difficult. Therefore, Wang Chongguo and Zhang Chenghua made a detailed operation scheme. Firstly, they make a headstand "Y"-shaped incision on the upper abdomen of the patient for medical probing inside the abdomen. They cut and ligated the artery of the left and right liver respectively as well as common hepatic duct and resected the sick liver quickly, then, they cut open the front wall of the vein and cut off some of the arterial walls. Finally, they connected the retrohepatic vena cava, hepatic vena cava and portosystem of the supplier and receiver to resume the blood flow in the liver. That is to say, the liver was successfully transplanted. Then they transplanted the kidney in the same way. The operation lasted for 15 hours.
Presently, the new liver and kidney work normally in the body of the patient and there's no sign of discomfort. It is said that the patient is still on medication and will be checked regularly.
