32 college-student soldiers get employed in advance by local units

 PLA Daily 2003-12-02

On November 22nd, Du Chengjiang, a college-student soldier of a division under the Chengdu Military Area Command, received a "letter of appointment" from Chongqing Yulin Construction Company. The company expressed willingness in the letter to engage him as soon as he finishes his studies in Jilin Architectural Industry College. According to the leaders of the division, among 38 college-student soldiers whose term of service is over, 32 soldiers have been "engaged" by local enterprises or public institutions.

At the end of 2001, the division recruited the first 38 college-student soldiers from Liaoning, Jilin and Henan Provinces. In order to foster their talents, the division specially issued a document entitled the "Opinions on Fostering the First Crop of College-Student Soldiers into Inter-Disciplinary Talents". In addition, division also let these student soldiers act as squad or platoon leaders and join research groups or different hobby clubs. During the two years, 8 of these student soldiers became Party members, 25 were honored excellent soldiers, 7 passed Band-4 College English Test, 11 obtained Level-3 Computer Certificate, and 23 became squad leaders.

When the time of demobilization is approaching, the division tried to create favorable employment conditions for to-be-demobilized veterans by way of recommending them to personnel affairs departments, civil affairs departments, local enterprises and public institutions in veterans' hometowns or arrange interviews between veterans and employment units. Many units were interested in these student soldiers after reading their resumes or having interviews. Learning that they'll go back to colleges to continue their studies, the units still would like to "engage" them in advance.

According to Yang Bing, deputy general manager of Harbin-based Liangdian Ads Design Company: these soldiers not only have knowledge, but also have excellent military quality. Such talents are hard to come by. So the employers are willing to wait until they finish their college studies. Li Ming was a third-year college student majoring in software design in Zhengzhou Commercial Institute before he joined the army. When he was still studying in the institute, he was rejected by a teaching practice unit due to his poor physical conditions. But now, after two years' service in the army, he is not only physically strong, but also has successfully developed two software systems. As a result four employers have expressed the wish to engage him, some companies indicated that they were willing to provide financial support to help him finish his study.
