On the morning of November 17, the Party committees and local governments of Zuogong and Bomi Counties of the Tibet Autonomous Region held a grand seeing-off ceremony at Bangda Airport, an airport with the highest elevation in the world, to see off 40 demobilized veterans of the 4th Detachment of the Armed Police Force, who had rushed to the Sichuan-Tibet Highway to deal with emergencies the night before.
On November 14, when Zhou Xiao, Huang Jiuming and another veteran of the 3rd squadron of the detachment were packing their luggage after they were announced to be demobilized when they suddenly heard that the primitive forest at the Zongzha Mountain of Zuogong County had caught fire, they immediately put down their luggage and rushed to the forest fire disaster spot with other comrades- in-arms. At the place, which is 4,700 meters above sea level, the three veterans fought fire for 2 days and one night without taking a break, together with their comrades-in-arms and local people. Finally the fire was put out. Then on November 15, about 14 km long road of Polong section of the Sichuan-Tibet Highway collapsed due to mud-rock flow and cave-in at 8 places because of heavy rain, and 6 vehicles and over 50 persons were stranded. All the to-be-demobilized veterans of the 4th detachment, together with their comrades-in-arms rushed to repair the road , braving the danger of being hit by the flying stones or swallowed by the mud-rock flow. Thanks to their efforts, the road was finally repaired and opened to traffic again on the morning of November 17.
The selfless dedication of these veterans displayed in fighting disasters have deeply touched the local people, and the local governments decided to present these veterans with the honorary certificates of "the Sichuan-Tibet Highway Guard".
