Officers of a unit in Tibet have upgraded their academic credentials

 PLA Daily 2003-11-11

The Party committee of a unit stationed in Tibet has recently enhanced its efforts for overall planning and intensified its coordinating efforts among different departments in order to effectively reduce disorder in its grassroots units and save up time for officers and men to study, and its efforts has achieved satisfactory results. Currently, 76% of its officers have upgraded their academic credentials, and 55% of its officers have got computer grade certificate and 99% of officers and men can skillfully operate newly acquired equipment. Over 10 officers won prizes in various specialized contests organized by the higher level.

Years ago, when the unit called on officers to attend the correspondence courses of a military academy, few people responded. This gave the Party committee plenty of foods for thought. Why were the people not enthusiastic about study? In order to find out the reasons, leaders of the unit went to the grassroots companies to make investigation. Eventually they came to know that the main reason was, the tasks of grassroots units were too many and officers and men had no time to study. After finding out the reason, the Party committee took measures to coordinate the work of various departments and canceled some unnecessary meetings and contests so as to save time for the officers and men to study. At the same time, the unit also invested one million yuan to build an officer training center and a specialized technical training base. The sound study environment has provided favorable conditions for officers and men to satisfy their desire to seek knowledge. The best case in point is Xiong Jinliang, a soldier from the 1st battalion with comparatively low level of education. However through his hard study, his educational level was greatly upgraded. So far he has published more than 20 articles in various news media and won 10 prizes in article solicitation contests.
