There's no cooking smoke coming from the camp site but the rumble of machines in the field service center. In an actual troops exercise held by an armored division of the Shenyang Military Area Command in the mid of October, the division tried a new mode of food supply by the field service center, enabling the grassroot companies of the division to bid farewell to the practice of "setting up pot to make meal".
At the beginning of the exercise, the logistics department of the division worked out a series of food supply scenarios and leader of the division found that although these scenarios could meet the demand of the exercise, it couldn't meet the requirements of modern warfare characterized by swift change, rapid tempo and quick transfer. Therefore, they demanded all the participant units not to set up kitchen on the camps for three days, and instead, the life service center to undertake wartime food supply.
After a careful investigation at the camp site of a armored regiment of the division, the reporter found the sign of the "Field Life Service Center". When he entered the bunker, he saw an underground food processing factory, including raw material processing, food making and supply. At 7:30 am, when the reporter came to the camp site of the No. 3 battalion, he witnessed a food van of the field service center distributing food there. Officer and men could enjoy more than 20 staple and auxiliary foods such as bread, steamed bread, soybean milk, milk, porridge, etc..
According to the director of the life service center of the division, although the companies didn't prepare food themselves, the food supplied by the service center could meet the nutrition and heat standard. An officer of the logistics department of the division told the reporter that the service centers of all the regiments had tried the new mode of rapid and mobile food supply under field conditions. Wherever the troops go, there's food supply. It is said that at the time of no kitchen is allowed, the training task and the training time remain the same. Most cook staff also participated in the training. With this experience, the army provisions officers at all levels knew how to carry out living support in the future wars.
