Elementary school retained for children of servicemen in Urumqi

 PLA Daily 2003-10-29

Officers and men of a unit stationed in Xinjiang visited the pupils and teachers of Urumqi No. 37 Elementary School in early October, brought with them were the following gifts: 100 desks and 10 computers for the school, and 5 keys to apartment houses for teachers.

The school is located in the barracks. In recent years, the number of pupils attending the school has been on the decline for various reasons. Earlier this year, the local education authority considered whether the school should be disestablished or merged with other schools. They knew that if the school were disestablished, the children of the servicemen would have to go to another school more than 10km away. After careful consideration, the local authorities decided to retain this elementary school. Hearing this, the Party committee of the unit decided to give greater support to the school to improve its teaching quality.
