Sending "spiritual food" to soldiers before mountains to be blocked by snow

 PLA Daily 2003-10-24

Since mid-October, the Shannan Military Sub-Command in Tibet carried canned food, rice and others up to sentry posts in the mountains. Apart from these food, there were others, for example, "spiritual food".

On October 13, 30 cadres from frontier sentry posts were receiving special trainings, including dealing with emergencies and routine training of personnel. The instructors were all experienced and capable. They also taught soldiers from the Tibetan sentry posts how to plant vegetables in greenhouses to supplement their diet in winter.

On October 15, we went together with a material supply team under Sun Deyu, commander-in-chief of the Shannan Military Sub-Command to a military post at a height of nearly 5,000m above sea level. The cargo included video CDs, books, chesses and so on. But, these things were somewhat different from regular ones. For example, playing cards bore phrases or sentences in Chinese, Tibetan and English, such as "We're the People's Liberation Army". There were also software for multimedia education and network knowledge and even some military computer games. Gu Ye, a second class NCO said excitedly: "Learning while playing. This winter will be more fruitful."

A repairing team also came to help the soldiers. They busied themselves with examining signal receivers of the satellite soon after they arrived. Since mid-September, they had been on the go, mending a lot of broken devices and training personnel.

Before we left, Sun Deyu asked the soldiers for ideas and suggestions. Some of them said that they needed some coursebooks before next May when entrances exams for military academy were about to be carried out. Sun guaranteed that all their requests and suggestions would be written down and solved in less than 10 days.
