The 39th Army of Chinese People's Volunteers (CPV) capture US soldiers in the Battle of Yunshan.

Yunshan County is in eastern North Pyongan Province, DPRK. It is surrounded by water and mountains clad with dense forests. The roads lead to Onjong, Changsong, Nyongbyon and Pakchon all meet here. As the transportation hub in northern DPRK, Yunshan's geographical position is very important.

The Battle of Yunshan is an important battle in the First Campaign during the War to Resist US Aggression and Aid Korea. It was the first military engagement between the Chinese People’s Volunteers (CPV) and the US Army on the Korean battleground. On November 1, 1950, the 39th Army of the CPV launched a powerful attack at Yunshan from three directions. The 116th Division was in charge of the main offensive, the 117th Division coordinated on the left wing , and the 115th Division on the right wing cut off the enemy's route of retreat from the south of Yunshan. The CPV troops successfully captured the Yunshan City and its surrounding areas on the morning of November 2.

In this battle, the 38th Army wiped out most of the 8th Regiment of the US Army’s 1st Cavalry Division and most of the 15th Regiment of the 1st Infantry Division of the ROK Army. The number of the US and ROK troops killed, wounded, and captured in the battle exceeded 2000, more than 1,800 were US soldiers. The CPV shot down three US fighters, seized four US fighters, seized and destroyed 28 tanks, 176 cars, 119 guns of various types, and many military supplies. The CPV won the victory of the first battle against the US Army, which greatly slapped the arrogance of the US aggressors and boosted the CPV troops’ confidence in defeating powerful enemies.
